Review: American Dirt

Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable.

But then the cartel comes in during a birthday party and wipes out her whole family.  It took me a month to read this book mainly because it follows the journey of Lydia and her son, Luca fleeing Mexico and entering the U.S. by crossing the border illegally.  A book like this can be so controversial in light of what is happening now, but I found it to be so profound and sad because it was so real.  It makes you feel blessed for what you have being born in the US and know there are so many stories like this one.

I loved how protective Lydia was of her son and how strong Luca became undertaking the trials he went through.  This book was 400 pages long and I only had a problem with the way some parts just dragged through.  All in all it was an interesting read.  #ARC  #threestars  #bookreview
